Library Reading Challenges

We are nearing the finish line……..

The Wyvern boys, the parents and teachers have been reading an interesting and varied selection of books throughout Terms 1 and 2 on their journey to complete their 2013 Reading Challenges. As Term 2 comes to an end, here are a few points to consider:

• All Reading Challenge logs are due Friday August 9^th 2013.
• For students, books must be signed off by a parent or carer.
• Reading Challenge booklists can be accessed here.
• Students, parents and teachers need to present their reading logs to Mrs Barnes so that they may be recorded as completed.
• Reading Challenge certificates for the Premier’s, Wyvern, Lexile and Parent/Teacher Challenges, will be presented to everyone who has completed their challenge, towards the end of Term 4.

Wyvern Music Showcase

In Week 6, all of Wyvern participated in “A Time to Celebrate“, this year’s Music Showcase.

Wyvern Winds, Strings, Percussion, Choir, Jazz, the Training and Intermediate Bands, Dragonetti, and the Stage 2 and 3 Choirs performed many marvelous musical items.

Since this year is our sesquicentenary, our Showcase’s theme was ‘Time’, so our ensembles performed several inspiring pieces of all genres themed on ‘Time’.

That night, everyone enjoyed themselves, performing their pieces with enthusiasm and showing their friends and family all the effort they had put into making the showcase spectacular. It was a truly sensational, and memorable event.

On behalf of the Music Department, we would like to thank everyone who participated in the Music Showcase.

Inner West Community Band – Kids Concert

The Inner West Community Band would like to invite Newington Preparatory School families to their Kids Concert at 10.00am on Saturday 29 June. It is being held at Stanmore Baptist Church, 140 Albany Road, Stanmore.

The concert will feature upbeat and familiar tunes, demos of each instrument, opportunities to join in with the music-making and even a chance to conduct the band! The performance will go for a kid-friendly 40 minutes, with a chance afterwards for children to meet the members of the band and see the instruments up close.

The cost is a Gold Coin donation.

Congratulations Language Perfect Students

Over 200 boys from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed in the Language World Championships from the 20th – 30th May 2013.

We have one of the youngest cohorts in the world and for the second year we have received outstanding results. We would like to thank all the participants  and their families for their support.

Boys will be receiving their certificates during an Assembly in Term 3. Congratulations to all the Wyvern boys!

The schools onsite car park is  maintained for officials, emergency vehicles and staff only. With the winter sport season upon us, the car park area can become very busy early in the morning. African Hat Day – an ‘Adopt a Goat’ Fundraiser

On the last day of term (Friday 21 June) we will be holding an African themed hat party. All boys are able to create their best African Hat and wear it throughout the day. Prizes will be given for the boys in each year group with the best hat. Entry into the competition will be via a gold coin donation.

To help motivate the Wyvern boys, Mr Holden has agreed to give the boys some ‘golden time’ (free time) on the last day of school if they raise enough money to buy 100 goats. Happy fundraising!

Parents can also be involved in this important fundraiser. Mr Holden has finally cleaned out his storeroom and we are looking for the following items to help support Malawi.

1. Suitcases (by the end of Term 2).
We need bags to transport clothes, books and stationary to Kasupe. Small or medium size soft suitcases or sports bags with or without wheels.  Doesn’t matter what condition they are in as long as the zips work.

2. Items for a second hand sale in November.
We are looking for items such as:

• Clothes – ladies, mens, children and infants
• Shoes, hand bags, hats, scarves, sarongs and jewellery
• Small household knick knacks – such a  fabrics, table cloths, cushions and doona covers (in good condition), unusual and quirky knick knacks, vases, china and ornaments
• No electronics

P and F News Events

“So much talent, it was just amazing.”

Congratulations to all the boys that were involved in the Wyvern Musical Showcase on Wednesday night. From the beginning to the end of the performance all the boys showed what talent they can unfold from singing, playing an instrument to sitting still and enjoying others perform. All the boys and their parents should be commended for the performance on the night. In addition, a huge thank you goes to the staff that organised the boys to and from rehearsals and coordinating class groups on the night. No show can go on so smoothly without the coordination of the Music Department and Ms Belshaw did and amazing job with her music team to bring us a wonderful performance. Please congratulate both Ms Belshaw and Ms McMillan.

WHITE CHRISTMAS IN JULY
Tickets are now on sale for ‘White Christmas in July’ to be held at ECCO Ristorante at Drummoyne. Kindy 2013 have done a fabulous job of making this special midyear event (a first at Wyvern) a wonderful white winter experience. The cost of the night ($78 per head) covers everything – food/drinks, entertainment and there will be a lucky door prize of – a table of 10 to the Black & White Ball – 14^th September. K-2 FATHER & SON CAMP
Camp is coming……23^rd August until 25^th August. Booking forms are now available and we are looking for volunteer dads to assist Costa Mina in organising parts of the events. The volunteer jobs are not big, just to be around on the weekend of the camp to assist. Next Two Weeks

Faith Matters

Listen up!

No wonder we want our children to listen, they can learn so much from listening well. But often we as adults fail to truly hear. Our views, our desires, our agendas simply get in the way of us really hearing what others have to say. The Bible gives good advice when James writes … “Everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak.”

Someone quipped, ‘God gave us two ears and one mouth because we need to listen twice as much as we talk.’ Learning that means being ‘quick to listen, slow to speak.’ Good listening builds relationships. But good listeners aren’t born, they’re trained! So here are a few suggestions to improve your listening:

1) Listen without interrupting. Resist the temptation to jump in and finish the sentence, or hijack the floor. Rein yourself in – just listen.

2) Listen to understand. Try to understand their point of view, feelings, thinking and needs. Good listening is hearing what they actually think, mean or feel, not what you imagine they do. Instead of guessing, ask, ‘Am I understanding you correctly? Do you mean…? Are you feeling…?’ In other words, don’t assume – verify.

3) Listen without judging. Don’t rush to conclusions. If what they say doesn’t quite add up, keep listening. ‘He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him’ (Proverbs 18:13). When you hear more, it may make sense.

4) Listen without correcting. Countering or devaluing. Saying, ‘That’s not the way it was,’ or, ‘What did you expect? If you hadn’t…’ or, ‘You’re just being too sensitive,’ puts people on guard and stops real communication.

5) Validate the speaker. Accept their perceptions and feelings as valid expressions of a valued person. ‘If I understand you correctly, you’re thinking…feeling…Am I right?’ Ask them to help get you on the same page with them. ‘Given what you’ve told me, I can see why you’d feel what you feel,’ is very validating and will increase their confidence and willingness to consider the solutions you may offer.

At first this approach may feel a little awkward or even contrived but give it a go; you’ll be surprised at what you actually hear and how your relationships are enhanced.

After looking at the idea of a drawn line, Sebastian carefully experimented using the sgraffito technique on scratch paper. His finished work shows a neatly designed and drawn path leading to a house.

Eden Horne – Year 5
Imaginative Mask (yellow and green mask)

Year 5 continued their study of exploring cultural identity through Masks. This plaster mask is an imaginative representation of themselves.

Year 3
Last term, Year 3 completed their study of the human body. In Art, they completed a human figure wire sculpture after studying Alberto Giacometti and his elongated figures.

Some of these sculptures may pop up in the Wyvern Biennale, to be held at the Concordia Gallery next term.

A Message from Mr Holden

Last week 350 Wyvern students performed superbly well in our annual musical showcase. The concert was a wonderful example of the breadth of opportunities in the creative arts that so may of our students relish.  I was impressed by every student’s level of engagement, strong focus and clear enjoyment as they performed. I thank our talented music team under the direction of Ms Alina Belshaw for putting on such a high calibre event.

Next week Wyvern students will bring home their end of Semester 1 reports. Having read all reports it is clear that students have made very good progress across the first two terms of the year. Class and Specialist Teachers will be available to meet parents next week should you require any further clarification.

Finally, as this is the last newsletter of the term I thank students and staff for their determined efforts this term. I also thank parents for your ongoing support of your sons at the school.
